Origins of
the Netherlands Carnival Festival
Originally, the Carnival of the Netherlands was a pagan
holiday. However, during the earlier times, the Catholic Church added this
event into their calendar as an additional festival that will lead up to Ash
Wednesday. This is followed by Lent and the fasting period before Easter.
Earlier this festival was celebrated throughout the
Netherlands. However, after World War II, Carnival in the Netherlands is
usually celebrated in the North Brabant and Limburg which are basically
Catholic provinces.

The Carnival of the Netherlands is a unique festival that
breaks the traditional norms of revelries. At this festival, the two most
important things are as follows:

will give the key of the city to someone who gets nominated for the 3 days of
the festival.

Prince Carnival – This is the person who will get the
keys to the festival.
